As of February 28, 2024, the North West provincial government has made significant progress in tracing ex-mineworkers for unclaimed compensation benefits and other social protection funds. They successfully located 20,798 individuals and paid out R76.9 million in claims from 2022 to 2023.

 

This ongoing initiative was launched in partnership with regional health officials and aims to address occupational disease compensation and other unclaimed funds.

The province is still working to find the outstanding 168 000 former mineworkers and their beneficiaries eligible for benefits, predominantly located in deep rural areas. Here traditional in person approaches are currently being employed, specifically utilising outreach programmes through hospitals.
